Speaker 1: [Music] the pace at which we live is deteriorating us to a degree physically emotionally and personally so the first step of the 12 steps of Consciousness is to slow down and it's to start to become aware of the experience of experiencing yourself because so often we're experiencing heartbreak we're experiencing setbacks we're experiencing failures and we're experiencing the positive things too but our brain like to focus on the negative because we need to control those areas to push forward and so when we can remove ourselves from looking out and start looking in it does become a slower Pace I'm Melanie bar welcome back to the shilp podcast your go-to place to empower you to live the life and business that you crave I'm here to talk about everything from Having the courage to thank you for joining us Dr Tracy every impactful Mission has a powerful beginning can you share yours with us and what led you to become the truth doctor and openly share your own mental health Journey as a therapist yes thank you so much to my li and therapist and I started my journey in mental health actually going to rehab at 15 years old and being exposed to the treatment world of mental health and substance use and as I moved to college I specialized in Psychology and still struggled with a lot of those symptoms to the point where I thought perhaps I wouldn't be able to be successful if I had all of these continuing issues take place I was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder at 22 and that kickstarted my career where I said this is what's known to society and the clinical field as a debilitating pervasive lifelong illness where most people don't live successful lives and I said that cannot be the case for me I know that there's more to me than this label and the way I feel inside and so over the last 13 years I have gained four degrees opened five businesses and became an award-winning mental health content creator online to over 2 million people and I think I completed my goal of prove that the stigma associated with this disorder is one inaccurate and two should have never been there in the first place thank you for sharing so openly someone going through what you've gone through can be so much more relatable and to see that they can achieve success yeah of course it hasn't been easy to be so vulnerable but over the last five years of having my platform seeing how my vulnerable words are the words of so many others who can't say them themselves makes it so worth it how do you balance entrepreneurship and mental health advocacy and how have you built your businesses if I 100% honest I built my businesses with the support of my husband and what's really important to say there is I've been with him for 20 years so he's seen all of my mental health struggles and what he has done is given me space time and skills to be my best self there's a sacrifice within our relationship where he lets me Thrive and that doesn't happen too much in in relationship Dynamics and that's been helpful because I am also autistic and so I struggle significantly with interpersonal communication ask aspects of my existence and so it's overwhelming to manage I have three active businesses right now and my husband supports me with operations on the back end of them because I do have a debilitating disorder more than one so it's finding the right people it's accepting where I'm at in my life and it's knowing that one small step forward in one business and then resting can almost be a step for another business break is progress and that's taken me some time to learn and I talk to Business Leaders around the world it's so good when two people come together that have different skills yes so necessary and you've written a book your unconscious is showing I see it behind you tell us about your book and what led you to become an author one of the top five Publishers in the country reached out and asked me to write a book about my story and they wanted it to be a memoir and I said my story's still going give me a couple more years but what I do have is tips tools and strategies that I've seen people globally ask for over the last 5 years and my main mission is to help people understand that they're a human being with an unconscious often we hear the word subconscious and we know what that means what's underneath our mind that we don't know is controlling us but there's a lot more to us than just our subconscious so in your unconscious is showing I talk about the underw workking of the mind of the body and of the brain how each of them have their own automaticity that we must understand to be in control of ourselves so the phrase your unconscious is showing is a welcome for people to look at themselves and see themselves and become what I call good self-conscious be self-conscious because you want to know yourself not because somebody's telling you there's something wrong with you and we all have those things going on underneath the surface and the title just makes you want to be more accepting of yourself yeah it's very critical the subtitle is take control of your life using the 12 steps of Consciousness and there I took the 12 steps of Alcoholics synonymous and I turned them into the 12 steps of Consciousness because being in this field for 12 years I've realized that introspection is so necessary for all people but not just in a structured way that AA may have for example we all deserve a step-by-step process that allows us to truly understand ourselves and gain control over what's affecting us negatively so the book itself is helpful to help you learn and then also to help you put those learnings into practice and how do you think the pace at which we live fits into that today the pace at which we live is deteriorating us to a degree physically emotionally interpersonally so the first step of the 12 12 steps of Consciousness is to slow down and it's to start to become aware of the experience of experiencing yourself because so often we're experiencing heartbreak we're experiencing setbacks we're experiencing failures and we're experiencing the positive things too but our brain likes to focus on the negative because we need to control those areas to push forward and so when we can remove ourselves from looking out and start looking in it does become a slower pace and a slower process and there's less to pay attention to which is necessary for the human mind with how much information is being input right now and it's much harder it's much more challenging to look in it is it's far more challenging to look in and once you've looked in for a good amount of time it becomes one of the safest places for you to look how has sharing your own experiences shaped the way you connect and support others growing up connecting with others was really difficult I ultimately believed that my inner experience and the struggles that I had understanding life and myself were all my own and I realized that a lot of other people have that experience too not only being a therapist but upon sharing my story with so many it's enlightening and refreshing to gain confidence in people saying you're not alone and in people saying I could share your video because I couldn't find the words myself and now my relationship has changed or my friend understands me better and so it's encouraging one to not feel alone and two to be the voice for others how do you see the conversations around mental health evolving in the next 5 to 10 years and what role do you hope to play in that change well I feel very proud that I've played a role in The Last 5 Years of mental health awareness communication and societ as a whole maybe we veered a little bit too far over toward therapy speak and focusing solely on mental health and it's also been very important over the next 5 to 10 years I think there's going to be a major shift in trying to stay as human as possible as technology continues to advance and I also think there's going to be a pullback of absorbing so much information and having potentially so many goals not only are we going inward with Consciousness and meditation but we're going inward with what's truly important what provides me stability what is my definition of success when it comes to waking up and feeling like I like myself in the morning it's going to be using our mental health as a building block to our life not as something that is attached to it that's problematic and I've fallen in love with five minute meditations it's amazing what five minutes can do yes it is amazing because like I said it can be scary to go inward at first but then eventually it's going to become one of the safest places for you to go to in the same way that a hug from a loved one that lasts 20 seconds can make your body and your mind feel so much better so can 60 seconds or 5 minutes of meditation what do you do for yourself each day to make sure that you're finding and living your joy I'm pretty busy right now with all of the businesses that I have going on in this book launch that's occurring in the beginning of March it comes down to having a daily skincare routine ultimately I joined the board of personal day which is a new skincare company founded by Lily Reinhardt and the products I have been able to participate fully in the development of them and the naming of them and the usage of them and even though I'm a licensed therapist have not had a morning routine my entire life and now being able to wake up and not only be a part of this brand be the mental health adviser for it but see it actually affecting my mental health to wake up have structure a routine like myself when I look in the mirror it's truly changed my life so something as simple as that can not only help you find Joy but can sustain it with consistency and care I love that and I'm a twin mom and the f- minute meditation has become part of my routine and I am so thankful for it because it centers me especially as someone running businesses and a busy mom but thank you for sharing that about a morning routine because that's not something that I've added to it so it's interesting to think about adding that as giving back to yourself yeah it's really nice it's helpful thank you so much for joining us today please share how and where we can find you and support you you can find me at TH truth.com or on Tik Tok Instagram and YouTube at the period truth period doctor and my book comes out on March 11th and is called your unconscious is showing take
