Have you ever sat at your desk, looked at your calendar, and thought, "If I keep doing only this, I'm going to outgrow my own life." You are good at what you do. People trust you and you get things done. But there is this quiet thought that keeps showing up. I am meant to build something that's mine. If that is you, this episode is for you. Not the version of you that has to have a perfect business plan. the real you who has a lot going on, big responsibilities, and still wants to grow. Today, we're going to walk through how to start and grow a business in a way that is practical, thoughtful, and honest. Welcome to the She Built It podcast. I'm your host, Melanie Bar. At She Built It, we talk a lot about what it really looks like to build a business, a career, and a life that you enjoy. Not just the highlight reel, the real process. In this episode, you will hear one of my own turning points and then I'll share a clear path you can use if you are asking, "How do I actually start? How do I grow without burning out?" And how do I make smart choices instead of guessing? A while ago, I had a day that looked successful on paper. Client calls were booked, invoices were paid, and our team was doing great work. But when I looked at everything together, I noticed a pattern. My clients were asking for support beyond podcasting. They needed support with SEO, organic media, YouTube, and digital growth. My first thought was, I do not want to stay in one lane when my clients clearly need more. The second thought was, this is bigger than me, and I don't want to do it alone. So, I started asking myself one simple question every morning. How can I level up today in a way that serves my clients and still feels true to me? That question did something important. It shifted me from feeling stuck to looking for solutions. And that is when the right person showed up. A senior digital marketing leader with decades of experience serving global brands. A person who could bring depth in SEO and digital growth to what we already do well at Shebuilt Media. I did not wait until everything was perfect. I noticed a need. I made a decision and I took thoughtful action. That is how most strong businesses grow. Not in one big leap, but in a series of honest decisions. When you are starting or growing, the first question is, "What problem do I help people solve and who needs it the most?" Take a minute and think about this. What are people always asking you for help with? What do you solve faster or better than the average person? When someone says, "You made that so much easier, what were you doing?" That is your starting point. Do not try to build a complicated offer yet. Start with one clear outcome for one type of person. Here's an example. I help health coaches turn their knowledge into a digital program. I help business owners clean up their messaging so the right clients understand what they do. If you're not clear, your audience will not be clear. Business growth starts with a focused problem that you solve. Confused people do not buy. Clear people do. Once you know the problem, your next step is a simple, focused offer. A strong first offer answers three things. Who is this for? What result do they get? What is the clear next step? Here is a simple structure you can use. I help this type of person get this specific result in this time frame. Here's an example. I help service-based business owners get their first 10 clients in 90 days. Then decide, will this be a one-on-one service, a project with a clear beginning and end, a small group or program? You do not need three offers. You need one for a real person who can say yes without needing a long explanation. If you can say it in one sentence, you're on the right track. Your business is not real until someone pays for it. This can sound harsh, but it is actually freeing. It means you do not have to have everything perfect before you start. You just need one person willing to trust you with a real problem. It looks like sharing your offer with a few people you know, asking is this something that would help you or someone you know, listening carefully to their questions and hesitations. When I expanded she built it media beyond podcast production into SEO and organic media, I did not start with a full service menu. I started with a conversation. I listened for where current clients are losing visibility, where they felt overwhelmed with digital strategy, what results mattered most to them. Then [clears throat] we shaped our services around real needs, not guesses. For you that might look like offering a pilot package to three clients at a founding rate, testing your process with them, or asking for feedback so you can refine and improve. Don't hide your idea. Share it, test it, and adjust it. If you build a business on your own energy, it will drain you. If you build it on systems, it can grow without breaking you. You do not need a huge tech stack to start. You need a repeatable way to attract clients, deliver your work, get paid, and stay organized. Think of it in four simple systems. Visibility, where people find you. Sales, how people say yes. Delivery, how you work with clients. And review, how do you learn and continue to improve? This is where the strategist in you gets to show up. Business growth is less about doing more and more about doing the right things in a simple and repeatable way. Your business can never consistently outgrow your skills. You are the engine of what you are building. If you want a stronger business, invest in a stronger you. This does not mean you have to have a huge program or a lot of degrees. Often it starts small. Learn how to use AI in a way that supports your work. Improving your communication so clients trust you more quickly. Learning leadership skills so you can bring on help without feeling like everything will fall apart. Building project management habits so you can stay on top of deadlines and details. When I decided to expand She Built It Media, I did not only invest in the business. I invested in the people and the skills that would carry our clients into the next season. bringing on senior talent, refining our internal systems, and staying curious about where podcasting, SEO, and organic media are going next. Ask yourself, what skill, if I grew this year, would change everything in my business? What would make me more confident with clients? What would make my decisions clearer and calmer? You may be driving home, making dinner, or walking the dog right now. Part of your mind is listening, and part of your mind is already imagining what you could build. I hope you leave this episode with something simple and concrete. Ask yourself these three questions and write down your answers. What problem do I help people solve? Who is one person I can share my idea with this week? What small skill can I start learning that will support my next vision of my business? You do not have to change everything this week. You just need to take the next honest step. You are not behind. You are exactly where you need to be to start. You are capable of building a business that fits your life, honors your values, and serves the people you were meant to work with. And you do not have to do it alone.
