Speaker 1: what microbiome friendly means and why is it a Cornerstone of your product life I'm very passionate about the whole microbiome science because microbiome it is an unseparable part of our skin we cannot speak about our skin without speaking of microbiome like we cannot speak about our health separately from microbiome so when we care about the skin we should care about the microbiome microbiome friendly and support the microbiome shells I'm Melanie bar welcome back to the Shep podcast your go-to place to empower you to live the life and business that you crave I'm here to talk here we go welcome back to the sheel podcast thank you for joining us what inspired you to create your business tell us about it and how has your background as a dermatologist shaped your Brand's philosophy thank you so much for the question as a dermatologist I specialized in the Cosmetic safety and worked as a cosmetic safety expert I was invited by big professional Brands like talgo and swiss Brands hmet to train the training team and to accomplish International trainings and one day I came with an idea to use peptides and probiotics in the skin care because this my safety expert mindset was the first time in my life I've seen ingredients which been even more efficient than traditional ingredients but so much safer but no one believed in this idea and I was so disappointed because I said it is genius that the future of skincare so I was stubborn enough for someone who might not know explain what microbiome friendly means and why is it a Cornerstone of your product line I'm very passionate about the whole microbiome science because microbiome it is an unseparable part of our skin we cannot speak about our skin without speaking of microbiome like we cannot speak about our health separately from microbiome so when we care about the skin we should care about the microbiome because our body delegates work to microbiome so if skin care is damaging micro microbiome or simply doesn't care it diminishes all results in the skin care so I believe that every product should be microbiome friendly and supports the microbiome shells and there's so much skin care out there today that I am not sure takes as much care I am happy that now microbiome becomes such a mainstream work even if sometimes it's misused or even used for some commercial purposes because when I started in 20 9 I've been speaking about the microbiome and even dermatologists didn't get the idea they've been like oh my God leaving bacteria in the cream are you joking and now still few Brands really truly care about the microbiome but it is a start and I believe then probably in 2030 absolutely All Brands and all skincare products will be microbiome friendly and it will be the good think and I'm optimistic even now it's probably only 10% of skincare Brands really care about microb not for marketing but for real purposes so interesting your products are made in Switzerland what is a process for developing formulas that are both effective and gentle a process of developing of formula is exciting and night marish in the same time and I'm a dermatologist I'm not a cosmetic chemist so I can speak about the formula development from my position because first I create the draft of the product based on my Dermatological experience and my clinical experience and after I am coming to our cosmetic chemistry and before I launch the brand I cooporate with many Laboratories and as a cosmetic safety expert I I new people in the industry and why I manufacture everything in Switzerland because the laboratory cosmotech which developed all our products since 2009 was the first laboratory who was really caring about cosmetic safety I started with them as a cosmetic safety expert and they are absolutely truthful in their quality control and in the same time they're very creative and it is a rare combination of factors so I come with them regularly with my crazy draft of the product produ including some ingredients which appears on the market like two weeks ago and I'm very excited about something new and after with a team of six amazing chemists we work on the formulation and very often after we go to molecular biologist or geneticist to see how a product affect gen activity in the skin obviously microbiologist to see how it works with microbiome and if it really can improve microbiome health and so at the end of the day it is a team work and sometimes there dozen people are involved and sometimes we are not agree with each other so we discussing I remember with one product we develop more than 70 prototypes and I believe everyone hated me because I was just no guys it's not what I really want but after when we're coming to the place when we start testing with the packaging and with stability of the product it's exciting moment but sometimes it takes years our latest launch of pigmentation cream and pigmentation mask we worked on the formulation almost six years but when you finish it's such a feeling then finally you accomplished as a cosmetic safety expert what misconceptions about skincare do
Speaker 1:
- you wish most consumers understood seem that probably the first misconception they really think then skin care cannot penetrate into the skin and honestly FDA position support this point of view because the FDA description of cosmetic product was defined like 90 years ago but science progressed and now we understand and cosmetic product and literally everything you apply on the skin can potentially penetrate into the skin at least partially but in another point of view of probably other half of customers everything penetrates into the skin everything can intoxicate you everything can be dangerous our skin is very efficient barrier so everything cannot penetrate into the skin and the whole skin care product in most of the time it doesn't penetrate into the skin in the Deep wires of the skin and it is good but on the other side we can make some ingredients of cosmetic products penetrate into the target wire for example when we're using peptides we can make our skin cells produce more it takes time it is technological it can be complicated but it is possible but in the same time we cannot make hyic acid penetrate into the skin it is too big just too big it covers the skin but it is a misconception like yes or no it is
- not binary and another misconception is I think that's about the price and I met so many people who think that the quality is defined by the price like more expensive the product is deeper it penetrates into the skin and better it will be for your skin and it is not so simple sometimes very affordable product can be really good for your skin in some situ a it's all you need but sometimes expensive products they are really good they are based on some Innovative ingredient Innovative technology but it is not like a golden rules like everything under $30 doesn't work everything $500 is Magic no it's so interesting because there's so much skinc care out there today that it's
Speaker 1: hard to know what is actually good for your skin are there certain things you can tell us to look for it is so difficult because I am almost 30 years in the industry and I suppose I have more knowledge about skincare products and an average consumer and it is still difficult for me I'm curious and sometimes on the dutyfree Shelf I find this beautiful jar I oh my God what is inside but I can read the label and it gives me some idea about what is inside average person probably cannot do because it is too complicated we have thousands of ingredients registered so it's just humanly impossible to know all of them but it is all you can get from the packaging and also you can apply on your hand and to see do you like the texture or not it says nothing about efficiency it says nothing about even potential allergic reaction because it still can happen if you didn't react immediately it doesn't exclude any allergic reaction in the future and Al that's the whole feeling of the product they like it or not so I suppose probably the best way it's to consult an expert and I know how it feels it's so difficult to find a real expert who will not be commercially engaged and will really think about the best for you but I think there there are a lot of skincare practitioners who are reallyy to help people with a consultation and also so some kind of self-education just to look for some basic things about your skin because when you understand how your skin functions if your skin has some layers and your skin has a microbiome and microbiomes are living chire built from bacteria and fungi who are beneficial for your skin so probably you will understand and product should not be disinfectant for example and if it contains me alcohol or some choric oxidine or benzo peroxide it will kill your microbiome so it's a Hint it can be not good and based on my experience in the industry I love independent Brands honestly because obviously I am a founder of Independent brand but independent Brands can do more incorporating science in their formul and we are less obliged to be commercially highly successful we are not obled to get huge margin by corporate Brands so for me that's always a better chance to find something interesting efficient and safe at the same time tell us about your brand and your products I launch the brand in 2009 and the whole idea of the brand at the start it was an opportunity to use new ingredients such as peptides and probiotics and skincare and 15 years ago almost no one in the industry believed in peptides and probiotics now both of them are mainstream they're very trendy they finally they can be high on Google search but I really seen the perspective in peptides and probots because they're safe but efficient in the same time and another of my arguments when I triy to introduce said to Big Brands I was like let's launch something for pregnant women at least to offer some alternative to Botto injections because in the pregnancy you cannot get injections of Botto but World changed and now we don't have 18 years old pregnant women or at least we have much less of 18 years old mothers the average age of the first child in the UK it's about 34 and in some countries it's even higher that's a whole category of women caring about their lles already and male Founders male marketing team so they told me that pregnancy is such a niche it's only 9 months and I will I never will say only nine months about the pregnancy the longest nine months in the human history and it's still one of the core value of the brand to create pregnancy Safe products because I believe that if products it's not safe to be applied on the skin of pregnant women we should not apply it on skin at all except for medical reasons so all our products they are pregnancy safe they are microbiome friendly because microbiome does at least half of work of the skin functioning foror skin and they based on Innovative ingredients such as peptides prebiotics probiotics plant stem cells mushrooms I love mushrooms I love to help skin to reveal real ability of the skin to function because it always looks beautiful and it makes sense because if we think about our microbiome on the inside why wouldn't we think about that on the outside exactly and also they are so closely linked because it's a real access but when you gut microbiome and the skin microbiome and even with your brain and skin and nervous system systems are closely related embryologically it is the same organ just a week of embryo development it's separated on two organs one becomes a skin and another it's like a tree contacting every cells in our body becomes the nervous system so skin care it's actually nervous system care and everything that you eat affects the skin but everything what you do for your skin affects your health your gut your brain so it's such a interconnectedness in the whole body functioning which is absolutely amazing for me too yeah so interesting what advice would you give aspiring entrepreneurs especially looking to enter the beauty and wellness
Speaker 1:
- industry especially for young women I will say don't be afraid and be strong don't let others explain what you should do and what you should not it is still very much patriarch industry paradoxically beauty industry looks like a female industry but it is not in 100% it's still beauty products created by men for women and that's what I don't like about the beauty industry all this paternalism like I I he it so many time women love beautiful jars women love crystals and gold that's not true we love real stuff we love effect if you have efficient skincare you don't care about the jar obviously it's good to listen to experts but just don't be too confident because that will be a lot of people who will teach you how to do it don't use this and that use these ingredients because Google search is high because everyone is speaking about it or don't use this packaging it looks ugly take this jar yes it's made in some Chinese Factory but people will love it because it's eye catching colors packaging the whole idea just if you have an idea keep it believe in yourself
- and also another thing don't be afraid to build a team with the people you like because it's very often what I see in our industry like we we don't it's not about friendship just you should find a real professional if you you don't like them you should not like them but for me it never worked I should like people to work with them because we work together all the time so many hours of the day and I personally feel uncomfortable if I feel like someone doesn't like me or I cannot like this person and so I think the best thing it's team even if it is a small team such good advice magic happens when we
Speaker 1: focus on the part of ourselves and our business that brings Joy we've talked a lot about business today what is one thing that you do to make sure that you're finding and living your joy first of all I'm very passionate about my ideas so what makes me happy it is an opportunity to realize this idea because to make the world better place if we will be more courageous and if we realize our Dream without being too realistic I would not do it it's too difficult but also another thing this famous work life balance and now I am in the place when I understand it better now I am 52 and honestly Before 40 I was like sleep is for losers I can do everything at the same time now I understanding better and I try to keep my work life Balan as much as I can so to have time for my children and time for family and have a couple of hours in the morning morning to swim to work out to leave some life and also I try to create and preserve this work life balance for the team because I know them it is so tempting do not sleep to get some great achievement to run after your dream but life it's a marathon so I'm trying to help our team to be more balanced it's good for me and I suppose it's good for people as well as I can see and team members want to work for someone that takes care of themselves as well yeah I think so I I not this kind of person who will not share personal information with team we know each other we know not only names of our children but if they have some problems in school we know who if someone takes a new cat everyone knows about this new kitten so I think it makes me happier because before launching the brand I worked in organized big companies and I didn't feel happy there it's not my world thank you so much for joining us today and for encouraging us to continue to make leaps in our life and be strong in our ideas and about the microbiome of the skin so interesting to learn about that please share with us how and where we can find you we have the me website obviously and M beauty.com and I write a lot of articles for our book so maybe it will be interesting to read and also I have Instagram page Dr Tina me thank you for joining us today I'd love to hear from you reach out to me at hello Sheil it.com on our shiled website or at Sheed on social thank you to my editor Rich draino who always makes us sound good until next time let nothing stop you from exper experiencing the life and business that you crave
